The original Rainier was developed in 1982, after the student guides at the Mount Rainier climbing school had taken to wearing running shoes instead of traditional, heavyweight hiking boots. The Rainier was designed as a lightweight alternative that offered climbing and hiking specific performance.

GORE-TEX® is utilized throughout, for weather-resistant functionality, while a Vibram® outsole offers durable, sure-footed traction.
